The cockatoo (family Cacatuidae) are large-bodied parrots with a crest of feathers on top of the head that stands erect when they are alarmed or excited. When surprised, it extends a large and striking head crest, which has a semicircular shape (similar to an umbrella, hence the alternative name).
The undersides of the wings and tail have a pale yellow or lemon color which flashes when they fly. It is similar to other species of white cockatoo such as yellow-crested cockatoo, sulfur-crested cockatoo, and a salmon-crested cockatoo, all of which have yellow, orange or pink crest feathers instead of white.
A cockatoo is any of the 21 parrot species belonging to the family Cacatuidae, the only family in the superfamily Cacatuoidea. Along with the Psittacoidea (true parrots) and the Strigopoidea (large New Zealand parrots), they make up the order Psittaciformes. The family has a mainly Australasian distribution, ranging from the Malaysia, Philippines and the eastern Indonesian islands of Wallacea to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Australia.
The average bird is around 18inches in length and weighs from 400g for smaller females up to 800g for a later male bird. The male is broader across the head and has a larger beak. The majority of both bird’s feathers are white with the upper and lower surfaces of some of the wing feathers having a yellow tint to them, as well as some of the larger feathers in the tail. In captivity, they are said to live from 40-60 years.
In their natural habitat, Cockatoos typically feed on various seeds, nuts and fruits, they prefer to eat seeds, tubers, corms, fruit, flowers and insects such as papaya, durian, langsat and rambutan. They often feed in large flocks, particularly when ground-feeding.
In captivity, a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo must have a varied diet that includes high-quality pellets and seed, along with fresh fruits and vegetables.
