What you should know about Cardinals

Northern Cardinals use twigs, bark strips, leaves, roots, and paper to build their nests. The nests are also lined with vines, grass, and hair. They usually choose dense shrubbery and small trees and place their nests from 10 to 15 feet above the ground.

Only female cardinals build the nest while the males protect their territory. The females often lay 2 to 5 eggs and incubate the eggs alone. Cardinals’ eggs are white in color and speckled with light brown or dark brown marks. On the other hand, the male cardinals, besides their guarding duty, find food to feed themselves and the females as well.

The cardinal’s diet consists mostly of seeds, fruit, insects, and small animals like worms and lizards. Due to their beautiful plumage, cardinals are among the most popular birds to feed and attract. Since they are non-migratory, cardinals will stay in the same area year-round as long as there are adequate shelter and food for them.

Things you need to avoid

1. Reflective surfaces.

Cardinals are known to attack intruders as a territory-protecting measure. Sometimes, they also consider their reflections are dangerous enemies. Though this behavior isn’t generally fatal, it may cause beak damage as well as unnecessary stress.

You can prevent this by eliminating the reflection of windows or mirrors near their nesting and feeding areas. For windows, try to use screens or bird netting to deter them. You can cover car mirrors with opaque items such as plastic bags when not in use.

2. Harmful chemicals

Insecticides, herbicides, and many other fertilizers can contaminate the cardinal’s food and water sources. This can often be lethal to your Cardinals. Therefore, avoid using chemicals and poisons in the vicinity of your bird feeders and birdbaths.

3. Predator-accessible feeding areas

If you have pets, you had better keep them away from Cardinal feeding areas. They can be a threat to this bird. Additionally, you should avoid placing feeders or scattering seed near low shrubs and bushes. The predators may hide there and suddenly attack them.

Don’t be upset if you have no conditions to attract birds, buying cardinal paper pop up cards to set up in your house is not a bad idea at all. In addition to that, you can use these pop-up greeting cards for birthday. They will be lovely gifts for kids, friends, and other relationships.
